Why Arkham Combat Worked (Better Than its Copycats)
The free flow combat system of the Batman Arkham games helped define third person action in the 2010s, but no matter how many games tried to imitate them, nothing quite hit that same mark.

Why TLOU Part II is my Favorite Stealth Game of the 2020's
Переглядів 20 тис.Місяць тому
The Last of Us Part II is still regularly talked about four years after release, but most of those discussions focus on the story as opposed to the gameplay. In this video, I make a case for why I believe that it is not only a solid stealth game, but is in fact one of the best stealth games of the decade. In an era where stealth in games has gotten somewhat stale, the Last of Us II sets itself ...

    If Ubisoft did the same thing for 15 years, and all games were like 1 and 2 parts, you would be whining that they copy one concept for many years and lazily siphon money from players, that the series has no new ideas and they buried themselves without looking for new concepts. Times change, so does the market, and with it the preferences of the players. Entertainment is a privilege, not a right. If you don't like the game, pass by and choose something else.

    "the focus on stealth" comment kinda stood out to me. My experience (now that it's finally on PC) is that, while all the tools are there and it's certainly competent for the genre, you are discouraged by the narrative to be a sneaky bastard. But the Mongols are such a dominant force that marching up to the front door for an honorable crossing of swords isn't an option (at first), so you have to. Then once you get stronger, it's usually faster (and imho more fun) to just stride up in full samurai armor and yell "come and have a go if you think you're hard enough" at everyone in earshot. I also feel this is reflected in how there are more armor sets and skills for open combat, while the stealth dagger upgrade is relatively cheap and I had it maxed out long before the first castle liberation. Though tbf I'm the kind of player who likes to meet (most) games on their terms. I loved Red Dead 2's slower pace, the camping, the fishing, the cooking and drinking and sleeping, in the same way I love watching Jin contemplate his allies, father, struggles, violating his oaths as a samurai while he's soaking in the hot springs water. I love how the bamboo cutting is how you level up your Resolve. I love that a certain bird will chirp and lead you to a POI, but are easier to ignore than a blinking compass marker if I'm not in the mood. While the wind is effectively no more than a diegetic GPS, I love how the line "[your father] is the wind at your back" gives a character motivation to care about it. The role-playing part of the RPG is so much more important to me than min-maxing stats and optimizing gameplay so it's a treat to play another game that says, "this is the fantasy, you are the guy, go be the action hero you used to daydream about" after Red Dead 2 did that for me with cowboys. It doesn't really do anything new outside of nailing the samurai fantasy, but it does everything *right*.

      The truth is you never know. But like I said, horror seemed like it was getting replaced with high octane action and it re-entered the public sphere. RPGs had to be watered down to sell in the 2010s and suddenly you can’t pick up a game without RPG mechanics it feels like. What is popular is always changing and sometimes it just takes one good game to boost a genre back up and convince studios to take chances.

It came out as 'AC Shadows', the most generic name of a video game ever... and it is utter shitshow and dumpster fire... none of the things players wanted is present... dense cityscapes, complex parkour, social stealth... it is a cheap ripoff of Ghost Of Tsushima's perfect gameplay systems (it's glaringly obvious how Ubislop tried to copy them and failed miserably), the voice acting and facial animations are soulless garbage and abysmal and visuals done terribly and pathetically.... I deeply regret having faith in Ubishit and now I hope that the company goes bankrupt soon...

    Assassin's Creed only needed (like, really) a crouching mechanic when social stealth started to be impossible in >most< situations. I don't feel the need for it in AC1, for instance. Since AC2, the design for the game cleary changed. I've replayed the Ezio Trilogy recently and what I've most missed in those games, compared to Syndicate (the game I was playing before playing the Ezio Trilogy again) was, actually, a cover mechanic. If AC2, Brotherhood(In a lesser extent since the social stealth is well implemented in this game) and Revelations had a cover mechanic, most of my problems with stealth in those games would simply vanish. In recent games, I also feel that. The tall grass stuff is okay, but not enough, there were so much room for design if a cover system was present in Mirage, for instance. I think AC is mostly built for social stealth. Of course, the game was initially design with that philosophy both narratively and mechanicaly, but I really mean it. If most AC games used that to it's full potential, those games would have a very, very good stealth without falling into the same categories as other stealth games. I don't expect the social stealth mechanic to come back like in AC 1 or Brotherhood anytime soon, but after playing the classics again, I've noticed that Assassin's Creed only really NEEDS a crouch mechanic, sometimes even a cover mechanic, when social stealth is very, very poorly implemented or when the game present challenges in closed quarters like the tombs in AC2.

    • @evandroescutatrap131
      @evandroescutatrap131 2 дні тому

      And, also, even if Ubisoft design poorly with social stealth in mind, even in that instance, it would allow for more creativity and fun. It's not a very hard mechanic to implement. I genuinaly don't know why they left it behind completely. AC2 don't have great level design for social stealth but when they build a mission to at least HAVE IT it still works. Now imagine when they put any effort to it, it is truly great.

    i mean it SO isn't. Gameplay wise it is incredibly limited. All the great story and style can't make up for it's complete lack in creativity in quest and gameplay. Every Quest, without any exception is "go somewhere, kill someone". All the great writing and voice acting can't hide this after a few hours. Sometimes with some enforced stealth which more often than not makes no logical sense and feels like a crowbared in handicap.

      @@sosaysjay I would consider those games a reboot of the original franchise like God of war 2018. These games were ubisofts attempt at emmulating Witcher 3 when the love for that game was at its peak. It was not, a game designed from the ground up with the intention of providing a next generation assassins creed experience. Yes, you can find interviews were executives use Witcher by name to talk about changes to gameplay with origins. There’s no passion or creative vision for how this game connects to AC or drives the experience forward. It just tries to ape the success of a fantasy game at its franchises own detriment. It is a game that does whatever it wants, and then loosely tries to tie itself to the lore of previous games in a way that feels like an after thought- while at the same time making it all so much more fantastical than it ever was previously. There is no creative intention to further an assassins creed experience, the whole game feels embarassed of that lineage. The creative intention you feel as an AC fan, is that they wanted a Witcher game in their portfolio and thought it would sell better with the ac logo on it- so rather than build a new ip with the gameplay systems found in odyssey,like ac with PoP, they made the exact opposite choice they made back in the mid 2000s. Assassins creed didn’t become its own ip solely because it had unique gameplay elements. It could’ve easily been a spin off. It became its own ip because the creative drive was not for PoP, it was a new idea that was coming out as the gameplay was being developed. You can see the Greek myth game the ACO devs wanted to make buried right beneath the surface of that AC title. And it’s the only parts of the game that there’s any passion baked in.

      @@joker-sh5hv Part of the reason why I made this video is because so many people have different perspectives on these things. You bring up God of War 2018, but they have been very open about the influence of the Last of Us and FromSoft games. I personally enjoy that influence, but I also frequent forums for Character Action Games. Within these circles, the new God of War games are seen as products that sold out for mass appeal and regressed to the mean instead of innovating within its original niche genre. Again, I do not feel that way, and the games are beloved by most, but there is a community that feels that. On the other side of that coin is Odyssey, and it is worth noting that a majority of the interviews discussing the influence of the Witcher came from Origins as you say. There is very little in the main game of Origins that has any mythological elements. To say that the beautiful world design and historical simulation of Origins is bereft of an AC identity is of course an opinion you have every right to have, but I would say it is far from objective. AC Origins has roughly the same gameplay loop as AC Brotherhood of traveling between quest markers and clearing out activities in each area. A much more similar gameplay loop than the metroidvania exploration of God of War 2018 (a game I like better than Origins, don't get me wrong). Again, not trying to change your mind. I just think it is interesting to see how people draw their lines of what does or does not respect a franchise's identity, and how a natural progression for one person is seen as a stark betrayal for another.

    • @joker-sh5hv
      @joker-sh5hv 2 дні тому

      @@sosaysjay no worries, I appreciate the discussion🤘🏻 at the core for me it comes down the the creative intention for the players experience. With god of war, the evolution of gameplay to something similar to last of us aligns with the maturing of the story telling and kratos himself. It feels like the gameplay has matured, and there is creative intent behind that. There’s a sense of cohesion across that game, that really shows the creative passion and commitment. Im sorry I know I’m talking in subjective terms so it’s not necessarily logical but I think that makes sense? I don’t think origins is super similar witcher. And I don’t think origins is anywhere near as guilty as odyssey is when it comes to lacking intent behind creating a meaningful AC game. However, odyssey doesn’t have the narrative intent that origins does. Origins from a narrative standpoint is very rooted in the “origins” of the pre established cannon. Valhalla even has that intent when you get past the side content. So while the gameplay might be shamelessly ripped from Witcher in origins, I think that the narrative intent really saves it, where that narrative intent is lacking in odyssey. And I love that game again, truly. But for me you can feel in every moment of the story and gameplay, that the studio seemed much more inspired by the Witcher and their own creative passion for Greek history and myth vs being inspired by ac history and cannon. At least that’s how I feel. And even with how much I personally dislike Valhalla, the 10 or so hours of actually ac story you get has that intent, and so does the entire story of origins.

    If you've ever duck-walked for more than 30-40 seconds, you'd realize that a big hit to Stamina should be a big repercussion of crouch-walking 😮‍💨

    My biggest criticism of the game is that it can get very repetitive, too much fighting and not enough variation, the open world lacks activities, other than that it’s a great game.

    There are many players like myself who just want an ending to the story that was started by AC1: The Piece of Eden, the aliens, and the genetic memories. I'd like to see an Assassin's Creed game go with: "Mankind is destined to leave this world and expand among the stars one day." Then the technology is acquired to travel the stars. From there, future games could find other races/beings in parts of the galaxy not unlike the aliens who left the Piece of Eden behind.

    The new Assassin's Creeds are empty/devoid of life. There are lots of buildings but no people. But, as many other commenters have noted, the title is Assassin's Creed. The main characters are assassin's first and foremost. And that means there should always be the option of completing objectives using purely stealthy means. I especially hated Odyssey for a wide range of problems: XP scaling, dialog options that you have to go look up on a Wiki to get the best ending, limited inventory, no assassin options, ISU power stealing, etc. I spent more time in my web browser on the Odyssey wiki pages to figure out what to say and selling junk from my inventory than actually playing the game.

    I tried to get into Valhalla and I just really can’t. I’m still trying but it’s meh to me. I love Odyssey a lot. But Valhalla is missing something and I don’t know what it is. And as far as the bird goes I thought I wasn’t utilizing it right. I was about 10 hours into playing assassin’s Creed Valhalla until I went back and played Odyssey because that was the game that came before it only to find out it wasn’t me not utilizing correctly. It’s just that the bird is really useless in Valhalla.

    I don't mind a predictable story, the issue with GoT is it was told in such a boring way. The cutscenes have bog standard video game dialogue and drag on for far too long. To compare them them to classic Japanese cinema is to not understand carefully crafted use of language.

    Alright. After beating AC1 and AC2 for the first time, I played AC Unity and loved it. The game is ambitious, The buildings are so large, I wouldn't be surprised if they're real size, and the missions are really elaborate, and it also has the best cutscenes in the franchise. I don't understand the criticism; I think you just have to 'git gud.' While the game can feel clunky at times, I eventually got the hang of it and now I'm having a blast. My playstyle is stealth-focused, so I avoid killing unless absolutely necessary. The game truly delivers the most complete assassin experience. To top it all, I play with all the HUD elements turned OFF. All of them.

      It is great that you like it, as I say in the video you should never base your opinion on what others think. However, it’s unproductive to say that someone who doesn’t like to just needs to git good. I’ve played the game many times over the years, and the creators who literally taught the internet how Arno’s movement works have long been in fairly unanimous agreement that Unity has the most over automated, poorly blended, mechanically inconsistent parkour in the series. LeoK has said it despite being one of the most important online guide makers for the franchise and Jcers has made multiple videos on the pitfalls of Unity despite being someone who has done the deepest parkour guides on the internet. The Dude Jqn literally discovered mechanics and still dedicated a whole video to Unity’s parkour failing. Again, those opinions certainly don’t need to be shared by you. But a common thread among creators who put hundreds of hours into Unity is the belief that it falls short, and to tell people they need to get good instead of pushing Ubisoft to make better games doesn’t hold water for me.

      @@sosaysjay It is very inconsistent, everything you said. What I mean by "git gud" is that it can be mastered, and you'll make fewer mistakes as you understand the mechanics better. Your gameplay will eventually look like those cool videos you see on the internet. I think I'm getting there; I started Unity this morning, and at first, I was like, "What is this?!" but I think I get it now. I love how I can make Arno take ridiculously long jumps. It makes traversal so satisfying. I get it, I'm having fun because I'm good at it. I'm playing it without the HUD, and I'm doing fine with stealth. I understand that not everyone will get it. I mean, people didn't know how to climb a lamp in AC2. There's a tutorial with millions of views. I think some people are just slow and complain when the game is too hard for them. That's the lesson Ubisoft learned from Unity; that's why the games are so basic now.

      @@jassykat I can understand that. For me, I had the usual bell curve. I started out hating it, but when I got 20-30 hours in and could handle the mechanics I was enjoying it. But after 150 hours on six playthroughs having studied every online video I can find, it just feels unacceptable, and has me really wishing we had manual ejects, coherent level design and placement, and well blended animations.

      @@sosaysjay Yeah, me too. I've been thinking about this. I'm no game dev, but I have a theory. I think the parkour is like this because of how everything is constructed. Since they wanted to make buildings more authentic, every building design isn't constrained by a consistent traversal mechanic. They had to ditch the old parkour system that relied on every building having perfectly consistent distances between climbable parts. Instead, they had to come up with a new one that can make sense of the more complex layout while giving the player full control of direction. Not to mention, they had online play in mind at all times, and I'm sure that influenced how Parkour ended up being. Unfortunately, the game sometimes has a hard time reading the player's intent. The concept was too ambitious for Ubisoft; so I understand. I don't want to say it's broken; it works fine for the most part, but just like the cover system, a little more polish would have been nice. You could say that about pretty much every Ubisoft game. That's why it doesn't bug me, really. If it's Ubisoft, it's bound to have some jank, just like Bethesda games.

    Assassin's Creed is am action/stealth series. Not a grindy RPG that requires 100 hours to complete a 30 hour story.

    Finished playing the PC port last week. It and the rest of the open world PlayStation PC ports (Spider-Man, Horizon, Days Gone, God of War and the like) play too similarly and too safe. It all becomes generic Ubislop after about 6 hours in each of them. Stop applauding mediocrity.
